After Mercer's experiments caused Harris to kill a miner on the ship, Nicole confronted Captain Benjamin Mathius about Mercer's immoral and dangerous treatments of Harris, a concern that was quickly brushed off by the Unitologist captain as Mathius instead accused her of having bigoted views towards members of the Church. While Nicole's treatments were seeming to improve his condition, the Unitologist doctor Challus Mercer insisted that Harris' delusions were "religiously significant" and was able to get Harris transferred to his care for his own experiments.
